“He sent from on high, he took me; he drew me out of many waters. He rescued me from my strong enemy and from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me. They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the Lord was my support. He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me.” -Psalm 18:16–19
God defends and succors his children by wonderful and extraordinary means. And even if sometimes it appears to the outsider a coincidence or anomaly, we children of God recognize He has sent help from on high. David says, “he took me; he drew me out of many waters. He rescued me…” It was all God!
David’s troubles here weren’t the ordinary troubles we face every day. They were troubles too mighty for him. They were enemies who hated him and that were too strong for him. He likens his troubles unto countless impetuous torrents that would have normally swallowed him or any other man a thousand times over. On top of the storms, his enemies chose that moment—his day of calamity—to close in on him. But when all human hope was gone, God came down. The Lord supported him and rescued him. The Lord brought him to a “broad” (expansive) place where he could breathe, where he was no longer closed in by enemies and danger. All this because the Lord delighted in David (i.e., Israel, the people of God, those in Christ).
And the most remarkable part of it all is that the Lord delights in his children because He is good, not because we are.
