The Word We Heed

Scott Postma — June 11, 2020

“but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.” –Psalm 1:2

The word meditate is interesting. The various entries for the definition of the word in the OED share in common the idea of “focusing one’s mind for a period of time.”

The etymology of the word is derived from the Latin meaning to “contemplate or measure.”

It is also interesting to note that the same Hebrew word translated meditate in this passage is the same word translated “to plot” in Psalm 2:1: Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?

It seems then the blessed man is the one who contemplates on the Law of the Lord consistently—when he gets up in the morning and before he goes to bed (Deut 6:5-9)—and measures the virtue and quality of his life by that Word instead of the word he hears from Hollywood or CNN.

A friend told me she feels the presence of God more closely these days since she turned off the news and is spending more time reading her Bible and praying.
