“The Lord knows the days of the blameless, and their heritage will remain forever; they are not put to shame in evil times; in the days of famine they have abundance.” -Psalm 37:18–19
Not only does the Lord know the way of the righteous (Psalm 1:6), he knows the days of the blameless. He intimately knows what is in store for each of us, and he comforts those who follow Christ with the knowledge that their heritage (Heb., inalienable possession) will remain forever (see vs. 9).
Further, we are assured that during famine and periods of destitution, the Lord’s people will not go without. Moreover, we will have abundance. The Lord knows the needs of his people before they ask and we are wise to trust him when we don’t have the answers. This is the gospel, echoed in the words of Jesus himself.
“Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” -Matthew 6:31–34
“And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life.” -Matthew 19:29
“As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.” -1 Timothy 6:17
