“Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.” (Matthew 7:3–5, ESV)
Trying to get a bad tangle out of your hair is painful and frustrating. The pulling and tugging and tearing inevitably invite the salty tears. Since it’s unhealthy and ugly to leave the tangles in, we’re wise to grab a comb and a mirror and work them out.
We have often encountered those unseemly people who’ve neglected the mirror and the comb but what is worse is noticing far too late how the backs of our own heads have been matted for an embarrassing amount of time.
“But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.” (James 1:25, ESV)
