A Psalm of David, when he fled from Absalom his son.
“O Lord, how many are my foes! Many are rising against me; many are saying of my soul, “There is no salvation for him in God.” Selah” -Psalm 3:1–2
Something else noteworthy is the event referenced in the title. This psalm was quite likely a morning hymn, penned amidst the events of Absalom’s rebellion against his father, David (2 Samuel 15:13ff). It ends with a technical term, Selah.
The meaning is disputed, but it does seem to imply that what has been previously said is something on which to pause and reflect.
Some suggest it is a place for meditation. Others suggest it means, “what do you think about them apples?”
Regardless, this is the songbook of our Christian heritage. Perhaps, it would serve us well this morning to pause and reflect on the perennial nature of this kind of human trouble.
