“Arise, O Lord; O God, lift up your hand; forget not the afflicted. Why does the wicked renounce God and say in his heart, “You will not call to account”? But you do see, for you note mischief and vexation, that you may take it into your hands; to you the helpless commits himself; you have been the helper of the fatherless. Break the arm of the wicked and evildoer; call his wickedness to account till you find none.” (Psalm 10:12–15, ESV)
Here we have a refrain from Psalm 9, one of the reasons the two are believed to have originally been one. The Judge of the Universe sees the mischief and vexation of the unbeliever and takes account. He is the helper of the fatherless, and though judgment seems for the moment to be delayed, it will come and the wicked will be called into account. The arm of the evil doer will be broken and the helpless with be vindicated.
“Vengeance is mine, and recompense, for the time when their foot shall slip; for the day of their calamity is at hand, and their doom comes swiftly.’” (Deuteronomy 32:35, ESV)
Let us join the Psalmist in praying for it, even now.
“Arise, O Lord; O God, lift up your hand; forget not the afflicted!”
