“But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head.” -Psalm 3:3
Amidst the blasphemies and taunting of his enemies, David was not fearful or faithless. He knew that with a shield as large and dependable as the Lord, his safety was not in question. And since it was the Lord who had exalted David to the throne (glorified him), it would be the Lord who would lift up his head again, even though Absalom was attempting to exalt himself.
It is no wonder then, that when Jesus’s enemy taunted him and crucified him in the most shameful manner, God lifted him up from the grave and glorified him forever.
And, since Jesus is the first fruits of our own glorified state (1 Corinthians 15:20), we must not try to take matters into our own hands, like Absalom, but say with David, “God is our shield, our glory, and the lifter up of our heads.”
