“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” (Matthew 5:5, ESV)
Meekness sounds like weakness. Sometimes it can feel that way too.
In reality, meekness carries with it the idea of not being overly impressed by a sense of one’s self-importance.
Jesus taught his disciples that the meek shall inherit the earth–a paradox of the highest order considering the might-makes-right mindset of the day.
Reflecting on and reiterating the message of Psalm 37, Jesus went on record to remind his disciples in every generation that a day was coming when the wicked would be gone.
All that would be left were those who were only overly impressed with the One who could make the wicked go away.
“In just a little while, the wicked will be no more; though you look carefully at his place, he will not be there. But the meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace.” (Psalm 37:10–11, ESV)
