“The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; he frustrates the plans of the peoples. The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of his heart to all generations. Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!” -Psalm 33:10–12
Not only is the word and work of the Lord inseparable and reliable in creation and deliverance. They are inseparable and reliable in the providential governance of nations as well. David stresses the importance of this truth in another place as well.
“Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying, “Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.” He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision. Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying, “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.”” -Psalm 2:1–6
The word nations is the Hebrew word goy, where we get the word Gentile. The Gentiles, who have rejected God, and worship false idols, have not chance of accomplishing their evil devices. They can plan and plot, but God frustrates the plans of the tribes of the earth who do not acknowledge him.
But the counsel of the Lord will not be frustrated. The plans of his heart will be accomplished in every generation because what he depress and what he accomplishes are inseparable and reliable. Therefore, when God is the Lord of a nation, that nation is on the right side of destiny. The people whom God has chosen as his heritage is a blessed people indeed.
