Love the Lord, all you his saints! The Lord preserves the faithful but abundantly repays the one who acts in pride. Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the Lord! -Psalm 31:23–24 (ESV)
The Psalm ends with David’s exhortation to the saints to love the Lord, to be strong, and to take courage. This is not because life’s troubles are finally all over. That is far from being the case. The very idea of preservation implies there will continue to be troubles through which we need God’s preserving hand.
Further, it reminds us not only who should be the object of our love since the temptation to love idols when there is trouble in our lives is real, but also it reminds us of one more reason to love God. He carries us through the hard providences.
So may God grant us grace to be brave and strong in the face of our troubles, knowing the Lord will preserve the faithful. That is all who wait on him.
