“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” (Matthew 5:6, ESV)
Righteousness is a full and complex idea. It can include uprightness in personal living, justice in social and political contexts, or the perfect fulfillment of the Law of God.
Unfortunately, achieving righteousness on our own is a bleak aspiration.
Fortunately, Jesus didn’t say we needed to secure righteousness on our own to be satisfied; he said we only needed to hunger and thirst for it.
Unfortunately, because we are dead in trespasses and sins, we do not have an appetite for righteousness, naturally (dead people don’t get hungry).
Fortunately, there is One who is able to give appetite to the dead.
(Could this be one possibility for the allowance of evil in the universe?)
“Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.” (Isaiah 55:1, ESV)
