“If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.” (Matthew 5:29–30, ESV)
It’s fairly certain Jesus didn’t literally have self-mutilation in mind when he said, “If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away.”
But perhaps, metaphorically speaking, he meant something close.
Sometimes, drastic circumstances call for drastic measures. When your eternal destination is at stake, a sinful stronghold is pretty drastic!
Further, when it’s considered that redemption from damnation required the most drastic of measures–crucifying God on a cross–losing a member doesn’t seem all that drastic anymore.
And neither does that other thing that’s keeping you from Christ.
