“His ways prosper at all times; your judgments are on high, out of his sight; as for all his foes, he puffs at them. He says in his heart, “I shall not be moved; throughout all generations I shall not meet adversity.”” (Psalm 10:5–6, ESV)
The schemes of the the wicked man appear to always be prospering. The wheel of fortune turns consistently in his favor. Since his vision, his moral imagination, is set so low, and God’s judgments are so far out of sight, they are out of his mind altogether. He is a man with enemies, but he simply blows them over with his words and blows them off with his confidence. They are nothing to him. God is nothing to him. And since judgment is delayed and so far removed, he continues to grow confident, believing he is unstoppable, invincible—the man among men.
Though we know from the Apostle Paul’s letter that “because of [his] hard and impenitent heart [he is] storing up wrath for [himself] on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed” (Romans 2:5, ESV), The Psalmist is not ready to resolve. Just like the reality we experience waiting for judgment, he allows the tension to build and hang in the air where we may contemplate the gravity of his foolishness.
