“Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have given me relief when I was in distress. Be gracious to me and hear my prayer!” -Psalm 4:1
In the first verse of this evening Psalm, David establishes reasons for his confidence to ask God to hear his prayer. He is confident in God’s character, that he will act justly according to his covenant to protect and bless his own (Leviticus 26:12). Moreover, God has rescued him from tight corners before, that is he has previously given him relief in the midst of his distress. Finally, David is confident in God’s gracious disposition.
God is not an impersonal force or an angry despot that must be appeased; He is a personal God, one who takes interest in our very lives. In Christ, our righteousness, the mediator of our Covenant with God, how much more can we be confident that he hears our prayers!
