“O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!” -Psalm 8:9
The Psalm ends as it began, with David praising God’s dominion over his creation, recounting how His splendor and magnificence fill the earth. In poetry, this is called in inclusio. Like a refrain, we now revisit the original chorus of praise, but this time with a new understanding. As wonderful as it is that man has dominion over nature, it comes second to man’s calling as servant and worshipper.
Like the children of Israel, the Psalmist, and by extension, we have seen God’s glory and goodness revealed. “Moses said, “Please show me your glory.” And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The Lord.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.” -Exodus 33:18–19
