“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.” (Matthew 5:21–22, ESV)
Jesus did not abolish the Law of God, nor did he correct it. Rather, he taught his disciples the full extent of the Law.
The Law (against murder without cause, for example) is not bound merely by action (i.e., the taking of a life).
In the kingdom of the gospel, the Law holds every man and woman accountable for the very words of his mouth, and ultimately, for the condition of his heart.
This doesn’t make the Law of God heavier than it was before; the revelation makes the gospel sweeter than we ever realized.
I never fully realized this before. You are right. It is about the condition of my heart. And it does make the gospel sweeter. I’m sure enjoying “crumbs.”
